Bon Jovi - Farm Aid I - September 22nd, 1985 Memorial Stadium, University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois, USA 1. Runaway 2. Heart of America Jon Bon Jovi and Friends - Farm Aid II - July 4th, 1986 Maynard Downs, Austin, Texas, USA 1. Suspicious Minds (Jon Bon Jovi lead vocal) 2. Smokin' in the Boys Room (Vince Neal lead vocal - JBJ backing vox, guitar) 3. Rocky Mountain Way (Joe Walsh lead vocal - JBJ backing vox, guitar) FARM AID I Bon Jovi was the very first artist at the very first Farm Aid back in 1985, they opened the show in front of a half filled stadium, and the initial audio really shows the crazy high winds that day. Within a few seconds the MTV folks fix the audio and Bon Jovi give it thier all. They played thier only real hit to that point "Runaway" and then do a tune Jon and Richie wrote just for the event. Heart of America impressed Willie Nelson so much he invited the band to record it for release at his own studio. Now you can take your pick from three possibilities of what happened next depending on which story you believe A.) the bands management and willie's management couldn't come to an agreement so it was never released and later lost B.) the band and willie "recreated" to the point that the track never got finished but a great friendship was begun C.) Willie had a fire at his studio and the master was destroyed. In any case the song was only ever played for an audience once and it is a great tune. FARM AID II This stands out for few reasons. It is the first time since forming Bon Jovi in 1983 that Jon performed live in public without his band. For this performance he plays with Willie Nelson and a bevy of talented studio players. He then backs up Vince Neil and a very high Joe Walsh on vocals and guitar. This was also the last show Jon played before hitting the road in support of the soon to be Multi-Platinum Slippery When Wet. |
